Taijitu
We have had the Taijitu artwork since September of 2021. My wife and I always loved the way it looked and wanted to incorporate it into one of our projects. As time went by, we released Inception and the BatTisai, but we knew that we had to do something with that artwork.
One night, we both sat down and began brainstorming ideas of how we wanted to bring this project to life. Ultimately, we decided on an undersized, organic, 6061 aluminum yoyo that had a simple design, but could still perform at a high level. We wanted a yoyo that could fit in your pocket, and you could carry around every day, but could still handle any trick you threw at it.
After deciding on the specs and shape, we spoke to Patrick Dressel of Dressel Designs, and he was able to get us a CAD render to send to our manufacturer. The prototyping for this project was one of the easiest and fastest we have gone through. We received the prototypes immediately in our special Prototype Blue, which many of you are familiar with and love!
When we received them, we were immediately taken away by how great it played. It exceeded our expectations. The D-bearing really gives it long spin times and a snappy response back to the hand. For its size it has some nice power to it and is definitely not a slouch.
Once we knew this was exactly what we wanted after a few weeks of throwing, we immediately put it into production. A few weeks into production, the manufacturer ran into a problem with the engraving and told us that they may not be able to engrave the artwork we wanted for it. When we heard this news, we were a bit deflated because we thought the artwork couldn’t be done. Luckily, we are friends with Luis Atilano, also known as ATILA, who has worked with us in the past as well as with other yoyo companies and we described what was going on and he immediately asked us to send him the artwork so that he could revise it and fix it.
Thankfully, he was able to work his magic on it and we were back in business. The manufacturer told us the engraving was perfect and once we heard that we immediately sent the artwork for the boxes, pins, and stickers.
The production of Taijitu went smoothly overall, other than the engraving dilemma. We had the yoyos with us a few weeks later and the pictures the manufacturer sent us of the yoyo with the engraving did not do it justice. In person, the engraving was incredible, it is easily one of the most complex and unique engravings we have done in a long time. Coincidentally, the Florida State Yoyo Contest would be in a week in a half or so, so we decided we would attend. We sent one of each colorway to sponsor the event. As the time was nearing, we hadn’t received our boxes, stickers, or pins. We became a little nervous that we wouldn’t get these in on time. The day before the contest, we got our pins in and unfortunately the boxes and stickers would not come in on time… or so we thought.
The day of the contest arrived, and we were a little disappointed that we wouldn’t have the boxes or stickers to give to everyone attending. After we had set up our both at the event and some time passed by a delivery driver from Fedex walked through the door asking for Few & Far Between Yoyos. We were overjoyed because we thought we would not receive the boxes on time for the event. So with that being said, we want to give a HUGE thank you to Glen and Gaites Klein who have worked with us from the beginning making our boxes and stickers for every one of our projects.
Most if not all of what is Taijitu was designed by my wife. As the first yoyo she designed, she did an amazing job and already has more ideas that will blow you away! We can’t wait to share them with you in the future! For the meantime, we hope you enjoy Taijitu!
